Tigers Clinch Spot in GSC Tourney is With Sweep at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – West Alabama clinched its spot in the 2017 Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament by sweeping a doubleheader from West Georgia Saturday at Cole Field. The Tigers won the first game, 10-7, in 11 innings before taking the nightcap, 6-2.
 
The Tigers are 30-15 overall and 19-10 in GSC play. West Georgia is 16-27 and 7-22. The third game of the series is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. CDT.
 
Along with the Tigers, Delta State and North Alabama have also nailed down spots in the conference tourney, which is likely to be hosted by Delta State May 6-9 in Cleveland, Mississippi.
 
West Alabama jumped out to a comfortable 6-0 lead after five innings in game one, but West Georgia rallied to tie the game after eight innings and force extra innings. The Tigers pushed across four runs in the top of the 11th to seal the win.
 
The Wolves jumped to a 1-0 lead after two innings in the second game, but UWA exploded for five runs in the third inning and never trailed again. West Georgia cut the margin to 5-3, but a solo home run by Nick Delgado stretched the lead to the final margin in the fourth inning. The homer was the fourth of the year for Delgado.
 
Jonathan Porter (4-3) pitched four innings in relief to pick up the win in game one for UWA, allowing a run on two hits. Tiger starter Layton Dill (4-3) went five innings, scattering four hits and allowing three runs for the win the nightcap. Braxton Wallace got the final three outs for his second save in game two.
 
Reliever Mitchell Mannino (3-3) took the loss in game one for West Georgia. Starter Ryan Sapp (2-5) went the distance for the loss in game two.
 
Taylor Stafford got four hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in four runs in the first game. He had five RBI in the doubleheader. Dylan Little had three hits in the opener and Luke Phillips three in the second game for UWA.
 
Little and Phillips also doubled in game one. Delgado has reached base in 44 of 45 games for the Tigers.
 
Ben Utley and Drew Eady had three hits in the two games for West Georgia. Artemis Kadkhodaian had a pair of doubles for the Wolves in game one. Ryan Raper hit his third homer of the season in the first game and Bradley Felkel his third in game two.
