Holbert, Morrisette, Winingham Lead UWA to 11-1 Win over UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Seth Holbert picked up a complete-game victory while Marcus Morrisette and Josh Winingham both had three hits as West Alabama cruised past Alabama Huntsville, 11-1, in a game called after eight innings due to the Gulf South Conference mercy rule.

West Alabama improved to 31-16 overall, 20-10 in GSC play. Alabama Huntsville is 21-24 and 14-17. The Tigers and Chargers end the regular season with a doubleheader Saturday at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.

"I was pleased with the way we jumped our early," UWA head coach Gary Rundles said. "With the way Seth was throwing, you had to figure that seven spot might just be enough. He had total command in what might be his best outing of the year."

Holbert (3-2) scattered just four hits and allowed a run over eight innings. He struck out four and walked one. UAH starter Jake Bracewell (2-4) allowed eight runs on eight hits over six innings to take the loss.

Most of West Alabama's damage was done when the Tigers sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Tyler Lee, Taylor Stafford and Dylan Little drove in runs in the inning, which was helped along by a pair of UAH throwing errors.

Morrisette was a home run away from hitting for the cycle for West Alabama, singling in the fourth, tripling and scoring in the seventh and then doubling off the centerfield wall to drive in Nick Delgado and Marcus Dicenzo to end the game in the bottom of the eighth.

All three of Winingham's hits were singles that saw him raise his batting average 15 points over the course of the game. Morrisette raised his average by 12 points in the game.

"I really like to see seniors getting hot as we head down the stretch," Rundles said. "If we can keep them going and add them to the five or six guys who have handled the bats well all season then some good things can happen."

Lee drove in three runs for the Tigers, while Little and Morrisette drove in two each.

Alabama Huntsville did not have a player with multiple hits. AJ Walden drove in the Chargers lone run with a single in the fourth inning.

The West Alabama win puts the Tigers one game behind second-place North Alabama. The Lions are at Valdosta State for three games to wrap up their regular season.

Twelve West Alabama seniors will be honored during pregame ceremonies prior to Saturday's first game. The ceremonies are set for 1:40 p.m. Between games the new digital scoreboard at Tartt Field will be dedicated and named for former Tiger baseball coach Hoss Bowlin.
