Tigers and Chargers Split GSC Doubleheader, UWA Waiting on Tourney Seeding

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – There was no question that West Alabama would be playing in the Gulf South Conference Tournament next Saturday on the Delta State campus in Cleveland, Mississippi.

Going into Saturday's doubleheader against Alabama Huntsville it was just a question of whether the Tigers would be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed.

The Tigers won game one, 2-1, when Taylor Stafford scored the game-winner on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning. UAH rallied back to win 9-2 in the nightcap and keep from getting swept in the three-game series.

After splitting the twinbill with the Chargers, UWA is waiting another day to find out its seed in the tourney. UAH will be the No. 8 seed.

Valdosta State swept a doubleheader from North Alabama on Saturday, so the Tigers and Lions are both 21-11 in GSC play. Should VSU complete the series sweep on Sunday at Valdosta State, UWA would be percentage points ahead of the Lions and go to Cleveland as the No. 2 seed.

"I've learned over the years to stop speculating and trying to figure out which matchup is best," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "Experience tells me to take what you have, be happy and make the best of it."

West Alabama's one-run win in game one came on the shoulders of starting pitcher Layton Dill (6-3), who allowed seven hits and an unearned run in 8.1 innings pitched. He didn't walk anybody and struck out three. Jonathan Porter got the final two outs for his fourth save. Taylor Clemmons (3-4) took the loss despite striking out nine.

"Layton was impressive and had command from the get-go," Rundles said. "When you put up five 1-2-3 innings in a GSC game, that's a good day."

Will Myers (6-3) was equally impressive for UAH in game two, going the distance while scattering three hits and striking out 11 for the win. UWA starter Cole Waites (5-1) took the UWA loss.

Nick Delgado had three hits for West Alabama, including his fifth home run of the year, in the opener. Luke Phillips and Marcus Morrisette chipped in two hits each for the Tigers.

Ben Rhodes and Jay Copeland had two hits each for Alabama Huntsville in the first game. Copeland went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader after getting three hits in the nightcap. AJ Walden had two hits for the Chargers, including his 12th homer of the year, in the second game. Trey Mathis also chipped in a pair of hits.
