Tigers Jump on MC Early and Often in 12-1 GSC Tournament Win

CLEVELAND, Miss. – West Alabama led by 11 runs after three innings and cruised to a 12-1 college baseball victory over Mississippi College in Game 3 of the 2017 Gulf South Conference Baseball Championships at Ferris Field on the campus of Delta State University.

The game was called after seven innings due to the GSC mercy rule, improving West Alabama to 33-17 on the season. Mississippi College is 20-26.

West Alabama chased Choctaw starter Hunter Mullis (4-5) after one-plus innings, putting up seven runs on six hits against the lefty. West Alabama starter Seth Holbert (4-2) went the distance for the Tiger win, scattering six hits while not walking anyone and striking out four.

Tyler Lee belted solo home runs to lead off the West Alabama second and fourth innings, his fifth and sixth of the season. Marcus Morrisette added a two-run shot, his eighth of the year, with two outs in the third.

"Barring just a couple of minor things, this may have been the best we have played all season," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "We set the tone early and kept going. There were a lot of good things done by a lot of players today."

Morrisette, who had four runs batted in on the day, belted a two-run single to stake Holbert and the Tigers to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. UWA scored five more on four hits in the second, with Luke Phillips and Brock Montgomery driving in two runs each to add to Lee's first homer.

Morrisette's homer, along with doubles from Taylor Stafford and Joel Murphy, plated four more in the third inning for the Tigers. Lee's second homer in the fourth was the final run for UWA.

Casey Echols' fourth homer of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning, accounted for all Choctaw scoring.

Stafford led a 14-hit UWA attach with three. Phillips, Morrisette and Lee chipped in two each.

Hunter Wilson was the only Mississippi College player with multiple hits, collecting two for the Choctaws.

West Alabama faces West Florida (26-23) Sunday at 8:30 p.m. in Game 8 of the tournament, which is set up to have the winner of two four-team pools play a single-game championship on Tuesday at 6 p.m. North Alabama had a walk-off 4-3 win over UWF on Saturday.

Sunday's game will be carried live on the Twin States Leader, ESPN 104.9 or via the espn1049 App. To find links to live stats and video go to the GSC Tournament page.
