Spring Hill Snaps UWA Win Streak at Five Games

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Brandon Harigel belted a grand slam home run in an eight-run fourth inning as Spring Hill hammered West Alabama, 12-2, in college baseball action Wednesday at Tartt Field.

Harigel's blast, his fifth of the year, was one of five hits in an inning that saw 14 Badgers come to the plate. Spring Hill used five hits and five walks in the frame to put the game away.

The win snapped a modest five-game winning streak for West Alabama (24-11) and was just the fourth time in 18 games that the Tigers have lost at home this year. UWA had not lost at home since Feb. 19, a 10-6 setback to Delta State. Spring Hill (20-15) increased its win streak to four games and improved to 12-5 on the road.

Conner Harrison drove in two runs with a two-out single in the top of the first to give Spring Hill an early 2-0 lead. Ulysses Fluellen drove in two more with a two-out single in the second to stake the Badgers to a 4-0 lead.

The eight-run explosion in the fourth stretched the Spring Hill lead to 12-0 before West Alabama had a hit. Brennan Fontenot and Daniel Rodriguez also drove in a run in the fourth and two more scored on wild pitches.

West Alabama's first hit was a solo homer run from Marcus Morrisette in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was Morrisette's fourth homer of the year.

Morrisette had two of West Alabama's three hits. Luke Latham found some right-centerfield grass on a blooper to drive in the Tigers only other run, chasing Morrisette, who had reached on an infield single.

Austin Barrios (3-4) went the distance for the pitching win, striking out four in a game shortened to seven innings due to the mercy rule. UWA starter Colton Morgan (2-2) was charged with the loss, allowing four hits and four earned runs in two innings.

Fluellen went 3-for-4 to lead an 11-hit Spring Hill attack, driving in two runs and scoring another. Hunter Romero and Justin Collier chipped in two hits each for the Badgers. Collier scored three runs.

West Alabama returns to Gulf South Conference play Saturday when West Florida (21-13, 13-8) visits Tartt Field for a 2 p.m. first pitch. In second place in the league standings, UWA is one game ahead of the third-place Argonauts.  Spring Hill faces Tuskegee for a Saturday doubleheader at Patterson Field in Montgomery.
