Argos Sweep UWA, Dropping Tigers from Second to Fifth in GSC Standings

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Florida used 29 hits and nine West Alabama errors to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from the Tigers Saturday at Tartt Field. The Argonauts won the first game, 7-5, and the nightcap, 10-4.

The sweep improved West Florida to 23-13 overall, 15-8 in the GSC. The Argos moved into a second place tie in the GSC standings with North Alabama, three games behind league-leading Delta State (27-8, 17-5).

West Alabama lost its third straight home game to go to 24-13 and 14-9. The Tigers are a game behind North Alabama and UWF and a half-game behind Union (25-12, 14-8).

West Florida belted out 15 hits in game one and then 12 more in the second game. West Alabama also swung the bats well, getting 13 hits in the opener and nine more in the second game, but nine errors, four wild pitches and five hit batsmen were too much to overcome.

West Alabama made seven errors in game two, just two short of the school record, tied earlier this season in a game against Miles College. Only four of West Florida's 10 runs in the nightcap were earned. The Tigers committed four miscues in a five-run UWF seventh inning alone.

Chase Kiefer, Justin Ambrosino and Ladeavon Matthews all had four hits in the twinbill for the Argonauts. Matthews collected his eighth double of the year and Keifer stole two bases to give him 25.

Nick Delgado, Dylan Little and Joel Murphy collected five hits each for West Alabama. Little had his 10th double of the year. Delgado stole his 15th base in the second game.

West Florida relievers Brian Browning (3-1) and Jared Middleton (3-0) earned the pitching wins. Middleton struck out seven in 3.2 innings pitched. UWA reliever Jonathan Porter (3-3) took the loss in game one and starter Seth Holbert (2-2) was the game two loser.

The Tigers and Argonauts play game three of the series Sunday at Tartt Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 104.9 and is available on the ESPN1049 App.
