Lee Homers Late as Tigers Beat Argos, 7-5

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – For the second time in the last three Gulf South Conference weekend series, Tyler Lee has hit a late-inning home run to win a Sunday game for West Alabama.

In Sunday's 7-5 victory over West Florida, the senior from Birmingham, Alabama belted his fourth homer of the year, a two-run blast over the wall in left field wall to put UWA ahead for good in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two weeks ago at Union, it was Lee's third long ball of the year that handed the Tigers a conference win.

"I am so proud of Tyler Lee," UWA coach Gary Rundles said. "He is a fifth-year senior who has more than paid his dues and is making the most of his opportunity. It's always fun when good things happen to good people."

After playing sparingly the last three seasons, Lee is hitting .313 with the four homers and 20 RBI this year. He also has eight doubles.

West Alabama snapped a three-game skid and improved to 25-13 overall and 15-9 in league play. West Florida is 23-14 and 15-9. The Tigers and Argonauts are tied for third place, a half-game behind Union in second place and 4.5 behind league-leading Delta State.

Leighton Lary (3-1) picked up the pitching win for UWA in relief of starter Layton Dill. Larry worked two scoreless innings, not allowing a hit and walking one. Jonathan Porter sat the Argos down in order in the ninth for his third save. UWF reliever JT Granat (2-5) allowed three runs and three hits in one inning of work to take the loss.

"It was a good outing by both Layton (Dill) and Leighton (Lary)," Rundles said. "Dill allowed just three earned runs in his six innings. Porter did what we expect Porter to do at the end."

West Florida opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning without the aid of a hit. A pair of walks, two UWA errors and a fielder's choice run batted in for Nick Kerkmann accounted for the quick 3-0 Argo lead.

Lee drove in the first of his three runs with an RBI single in the second inning to cut the lead to 2-1 before the Tigers pushed across three runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage. The big blow in the fifth was a two-run triple by Dylan Little, his fourth of the year.

West Florida regained the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits with two outs in the inning. Chase Keifer drove in the runs with a single.

Josh Winningham walked with one out in the eighth and was on base for Lee's game-winner. Joel Murphy doubled with two outs and Nick Delgado doubled him in to increase the West Alabama lead to the final margin.

Delgado and Lee had two hits each in a 10-hit Tiger attack. West Florida managed just six hits off the three UWA pitchers, with no player getting more than one.

West Alabama steps out of conference and concludes a nine-game homestand by hosting William Carey at 4 p.m. Tuesday. UWF is host to Spring Hill on Tuesday at
