Matthews Sac Fly Secures 3-2 Win Over West Alabama

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Ladeavon Matthews sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted West Florida to a 3-2 win over West Alabama in Game 8 of the 2017 Gulf South Conference Baseball Tournament Sunday at Ferris Field on the campus of Delta State University.

Matt Sullivan hit his first two home runs of the season, solo shots in the second and fourth innings, to give West Florida a 2-0 lead that would hold up until the top of the ninth inning.

West Alabama tied the game in the ninth, scoring two runs on three hits. The game-tying blow was a double by Tyler Lee that drove in Dylan Little, who also doubled in the inning.

The Tigers had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of 10th, but failed to score when reliever Steve McClellan struck out Marcus Morrisette to end the inning.

UWA reliever Brady Badon walked Chase Kiefer to open the bottom of the 10th. Kiefer promptly stole his 29th base of the year before a bunt single by Brandon Harmon moved Kiefer to third.

The Tigers summoned closer Jonathan Porter to pitch to Matthews, who lifted the sac fly to left to win the game.

McClellan (1-3) picked up the pitching win despite facing just one batter. Badon (3-1) absorbed the loss, allowing a run and a hit in 2.1 innings pitched.

Both starters deserved better. UWF starter Walker O'Connor pitched 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out seven and walking none. UWA's Cole Waites allowed two runs on six hits, striking out nine and walking three in 6.2 innings.

Sullivan was the only Argonaut with two hits. Luke Phillips and Little had two hits each for West Alabama.

West Alabama finishes pool play in the tournament by facing North Alabama at 1:30 p.m. on Monday with a possible regional bid on the line. West Florida plays Mississippi College at 8:30 p.m.
