Cox Scores Golden Goal in 2-1 UWA Win over West Florida

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Jamie Cox wasted virtually no time in extra time, scoring the golden goal just 50 seconds in, to lift West Alabama to a 2-1 Gulf South Conference men's soccer win over West Florida Friday at Tiger Stadium.

The win was the second straight in extra time for the Tigers in as many matches this season at Tiger Stadium. UWA beat the University of Mobile, 2-1, in extra minutes back on Sept. 4.

The Tigers improved 3-1 overall, 1-0 in GSC play. West Florida fell to 1-2 and 0-2.

The match also marked the third consecutive to go to extra time against West Florida over the last two seasons, with UWA winning two, including claiming the 2016 GSC championship in a 6-5 penalty kick shootout back on Nov. 6. The other ended in a 2-2 draw on Oct. 23 of last season.

Cox's goal came of assists by Keegan McQueen and Jean-Baptiste Meyniel. The Tigers first goal was by Ali Brador, also from Meyniel.

"It was great to see our captain Jamie Cox step up to the plate and get a game-winner," UWA head coach Matthew Thorne said. "The goal from Ali got us going. We came out strong and had the opportunity to score more goals early.

"I felt the tempo and intensity drop after that to allow West Florida to possess the ball more," Thorne said. "This was an absolute battle and we have a lot of respect for West Florida and their coaching staff."

Sean Hoffstatter made the most of his lone shot for the Argonauts, scoring at the 75:11 mark to knot the match at 1-1. Jacob Murray was credited with the assist.

"To lose the lead late and then bounce back shows a great level of composure," Thorne said. "I am very proud of the character we continue to show."

UWA keeper Brad Louis improved to 3-1 by saving three of four shots on goal by the Argonauts. Reserve goalie Austin Zelnik allowed the game winner after replacing Jacob Murray, who left with an injury after stopping two of three shots on goal in just over 75 minutes.

West Alabama outshot UWF 13-7, but both clubs had four shots on goal.

The Tigers remain at home on Sunday to face Spring Hill College. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium.
