UWA Wins Home Opener 3-0 Over Miles

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – After opening the season with 12 matches on the road, West Alabama opened its home volleyball schedule with a 3-0 win over Miles College Tuesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Improving to 8-5, The Tigers defeated the Golden Bears 25-11, 25-14, 25-12 while winning for the fifth time in the last six matches. Miles College dropped to 7-5.

"I saw a lot of good things, but I also saw a lot of things that we need to work on before we get into conference play this weekend," Tiger head coach Alexis Meeks said. "We are still trying to figure out our lineup, still trying to put the pieces of that puzzle together."

Taylor Donato, Briana Sandifer, Jaime Lancellot and Bret Luther all had seven kills to lead the West Alabama attack.  The Tigers posted a .375 hitting percentage through the three sets, with Donato at .600, Lancellot at .583 and Luther at .462.

"Miles did a good job of digging," Meeks said. "They made us find different ways to score."

Sandifer was awarded a commemorative ball prior to the match for recording her 1,000th career kill in a 3-0 win over Malone University at the Westminster Tournament in Salt Lake City on Sept. 8.

The Miles attack was stymied as UWA posted 16 block assists, lead by Lancellot and Luther with five each. The Tigers also used 18 service aces to record the straight set victory. Kassie Till had four aces, while Jordyn Beans and Donato had three each. Till also had 24 assists.

Na'Kina Levingston had five kills to pace the Miles attack. Tatiyana Thomas recorded 15 assists.

West Alabama opens Gulf South Conference play Saturday at Mississippi College. Match time is 1 p.m. at A.E. Wood Coliseum in Clinton, Mississippi. Miles plays Paine in the opening round of the SIAC Crossover on Thursday.
