Tigers earn first GSC win of season

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The road tested West Alabama Tigers took to Clinton, Miss. and faced the Mississippi College Choctaws where the Tigers earned a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference competition at A.E. Wood Coliseum.

With the win, the Tigers move to 9-5 overall and 1-0 to open GSC play. MC falls to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

"Today was such a great win for us and a great way to open up conference," said Head Coach Alexis Meeks. "We finally have the consistency we've been searching for and the girls are really applying what we've worked on in practice. It's always tough to travel and play on the road but it didn't affect us today and we stayed on the gas pedal throughout the whole match. We wanted to use this match to show the GSC what we are capable of this year and we did just that."

Briana Sandifer led the way with 15 kills while Taylor Donato and Jaime Lancellot both contributed five kills each. UWA posted a .233 hitting percentage with Sandifer posting a .406 percentage on a team leading 32 attacks.

The defense was also impressive with three Tigers posting double digit digs. Rebecca Johnson racked up 18 digs followed by Alex Fuelling with 13 and Sandifer totaling 11. Kassie Till led the way with 24 assists.

Hannah Ward led Mississippi College with five kills and Madison Kimes amassed 16 digs.

UWA returns to action Tuesday at home in Pruitt Hall against GSC opponent Christian Brothers starting at 6 p.m. MC travels for Jackson, Tenn. To face Union on Sept. 26.
