Tigers win conference home opener 3-1 over CBU

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –  The West Alabama Tigers opened their home slate in the Gulf South Conference with a gritty 3-1 victory over the Lady Bucs of Christian Brothers Tuesday in Pruitt Hall.

UWA moves to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in GSC play. CBU falls to 7-9 and 2-2 in conference play.

"I thought that we came out a little flat to my liking," said Head Coach Alexis Meeks. "CBU is a great team and we knew they were going to have really big hitters. They run a super, fast tempo offense and they are not afraid to take big swings. So, I knew that if weren't disciplined in our blocking schemes and our defense that it was going to be a tight game, it was in those first two sets and even though we pulled them off I knew going into that third set it'd be point for point and sure enough they pulled off that set."

The Tigers won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-22 before dropping the third set 25-18 to the Lady Bucs. However, UWA came roaring back to take the final set and the match win 25-17.

"I thought our best set was set four. Our energy was high and the crowd was great," said Meeks. "We followed the game plan, everybody was being aggressive and that's what I wish we would've done from the beginning. But we stayed strong throughout the entire game, took advantage of their errors, served really great and so it was a great win."

Briana Sandifer was superb on both offense and defense with 11 kills and four blocks. Bret Luther finished with eight kills which was good for second on the team for the night. Taylor Donato led the defense with seven blocks and added six digs.

Alex Fuelling totaled three service aces and 11 digs with Rebecca Johnson also reaching double digit digs at 10 with a service ace of her own.

The Tigers hit the road once more for a trip to Cleveland, Tenn. for a GSC match against the Lee University Friday at 5 p.m. CBU travels to Montevallo on Sept. 29.
