Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Nicholas J. Finch

Men’s soccer rides early goals to 2-1 victory over USC-Aiken

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Two goals within the first 17 minutes of the match gave the West Alabama Tigers all the lead they needed as they claimed a 2-1 victory of the South Carolina Aiken Pacers.

UWA moves to 5-2 overall on the season and USC-Aiken drops to 3-3-1.

Gaspard Voituriez-Donnelly played a part in both the goals assisting Liam Ireland for his second goal of the year at the 10:15 mark and then Voituriez-Donnelly scored one of his own with 16:21 passed in the match off an assist from Ali Brador.

"We started the night off strong. We had a very good tempo and moved the ball pretty well, scored one or two very good goals and could've gotten one or two more before the half," said Head coach Matthew Thorne. "In the second half, unfortunately we took our foot off the gas. We weren't moving the ball as quick. We weren't defending or winning the second balls as quick and let them into the game a little of bit."

The UWA offense came out aggressive once more and outshot the Pacers 14-12. Brador led the team with five shots with Voituriez-Donnelly right behind him taking four shots.

Both teams were more physical in the second half with the total numbers of fouls climbing up to 34 during the match.

"Any game here at Tiger Stadium is a quick game on the turf, the bounce is a bit higher, there're going to be more 50-50 balls, so you're going to see a more physical matchup," said Thorne. "Credit to Aiken, they have some very good players. They have a lot of fire power up top in attack and they can cause any team problems. Yeah, the game got physical, but I felt we could've controlled it more by winning on the second balls, implementing our game, getting the ball on our feet and playing quick from there."

Goalkeeper Brad Louis collected three saves to move his personal record to 4-2.

Kento Ito scored the only goal for USC-Aiken on a penalty kick at the 86:57 mark.

"They didn't score a goal until the penalty at the very end," said Thorne. "But at the end of the day, we got the win and that's the most important part."

The Tigers hit the road Friday to face Auburn-Montgomery in a Gulf South Conference match starting at 5 p.m. USC-Aiken returns to Peach Belt Conference competition against Young Harris.
