Tigers drop GSC match 3-2 to Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – After winning the first two sets, all seemed to be going the West Alabama Tigers way. However, a tough third set that saw the Tigers force it into extra points only the hosting Lee Lady Flames take it and the remaining sets to claim a 3-2 victory in the Gulf South Conference Match.

UWA drops its first GSC match of the season to fall to 10-6 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Lee improves to 9-3 and 3-2 in the GSC.

"This was a tough tough loss, but a great learning experience," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "We showed in the first two sets what kind of team we are, but Lee pushed us to make adjustments and we just couldn't execute them fast enough. We need to do a better job of staying consistent throughout an entire match and I know that with time we will get better at that. That win was well deserved by Lee and I also want to congratulate Coach Hudson on her 800th career win tonight. She's a great friend and mentor who I learn immensely from."

The Tigers won the first to sets 25-18 and 25-14, but found themselves down 24-19 in the third set. West Alabama rallied with five straight points before two errors gave Lee the set and the momentum needed for the come-from-behind win.

Briana Sandifer once again led UWA with 18 kills and 13 digs. Taylor Donato, 14, and Bret Luther, 12, also contributed double digit kills for the Tigers. Kassie Till put up 50 assists and defensively added 12 digs.

As a unit, West Alabama posted a .263 hitting percentage 171 attacks.

Silvia Sartori led the Lady Flames with 20 kills while Kristi Farley posted 29 assists.

UWA continues the road trip tomorrow in Rome, Ga. against the Shorter Hawks in GSC competition starting at 1 p.m. locally. Lee hosts Mississippi College at the Paul Dana Walker Arena on Sept. 30.
