Tigers outlast Shorter in 3-0 GSC victory

ROME, Ga.— Each set was close, but the West Alabama Tigers found a way to persevere and defeat the Shorter Hawks in a Gulf South Conference match Saturday afternoon.

With the win, UWA moves to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in GSC play while Shorter falls to 9-5 overall in 3-2 in the conference.

"Last night was heartbreaking and it's tough for a team to bounce back from that right away especially on the road," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "However, my girls did just that today and that proves how great of a team we are. They were energetic, fired up and followed our game plan perfectly and as a coach that's all you can ask for. Our theme this year has been learning. I'm trying to get them to understand that losses happen, but it's how you respond that matters. We still have a ways to go but I could not be more proud of this team."

The freshman McKaidan Moore led the Tigers with 11 kills while Briana Sandifer, 10 kills, and Taylor Donato, nine kills, rounded out the attack. UWA posted a .288 hitting percentage with a combined 49 kills on 111 total attacks to outpace Shorter. Kassie Till assisted on 42 of those kills.

Rebecca Johnson provided 20 kills for the defense with Sandifer adding 10 digs to keep some Tiger rallies alive. Bret Luther and Donato each registered a block in the victory.

Tiffani Estep led the Hawks offense with 10 kills.

UWA returns to action Friday in Pruitt Hall for a GSC home match against the Montevallo Falcons starting at 6 p.m. Shorter travels to meet North Alabama Oct. 3 in Florence, Ala.
