Lee Hands Tiger Women 66-57 Basketball Loss

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Carrie Cheeks scored 17 points to lead three Lee scorers in double figures as the Lady Flames defeated West Alabama, 66-57, in Gulf South Conference basketball action Wednesday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win was the fifth straight for Lee, who improved to 13-3 overall and 5-2 in the GSC. West Alabama dipped to 6-9 and 3-5.

"We are just not a very sharp team mentally," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We shoot 16 more free throws than our opponent on our home floor and still get beat. That's what happens when you turn it over 21 times."

West Alabama led 18-17 after the first quarter, but was limited to just eight points in the second quarter and went to halftime behind 30-26. Lee led the entire second half and by as many as 17 points with 4:53 left in the game.

"We hung with them early, but let it get away in the second quarter," Cram said. "We outrebounded them (40-37), so that was a positive, but every time we get an advantage we shoot ourselves in the foot and give the positive back."

Neither team shot particularly well, with UWA converting just 38 percent (19-50) from the floor and Lee 40 percent (25-62). West Alabama was 17-of-29 (58 percent) from the free throw line, while the Lady Flames were 8-of-13 (61 percent) after not attempting a free shot in the first half.

Lindsey Roddy followed Cheeks with 14 points and Erin Walsh added 12 for the Lady Flames. Cheeks collected seven rebounds and Abby Bertram dished out six assists.

Kierra Groce scored 14 points to lead the Tigers, followed by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 10. Garrett-Hammett and J'Nyiah Daniels had six rebounds each.

West Alabama has the weekend off before traveling to Delta State on Monday. Lee is host to Shorter Saturday.
