CLEVELAND, Miss.Tazsa Garrett-Hammett recorded her fourth double-double of the season and West Alabama stormed back from 16 points behind to defeat Delta State, 64-51, Monday at Walter Sillers Coliseum

The win was the first for West Alabama at Delta State since Nov. 27, 2004 and improved the Tigers to 7-9, 4-5 in GSC play. Delta State dropped to 6-10 and 4-6.

Delta State led 12-9 after the first period, but West Alabama went 7:26 from the end of the first period to midway in the second without scoring, falling behind 16 points. The Tigers went without a field goal for 7:56, but used an 8-2 run to end the first half down 27-18.

UWA shot 25 percent from the floor in the first half, making just 6-of-24 and 38 percent from the free throw line, converting just 5-of-13. DSU made just 12-of-36 (33 percent) and went to the free throw line just three times, making two, in the first two quarters.

"We weren't playing with any intensity on the first half, but came out in the second half and took the game to them," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "Once we got it down from 16 to nine points down we felt like we could come back and we did."

Delta State returned the favor in the third quarter, not scoring a field goal for just over eight minutes in the period while West Alabama closed the period on a 29-9 run and a 40-38 lead. The Tigers kept the Lady Statesmen from scoring once for 5:08 and then for another stretch of 2:33 in the quarter.

The Tiger defense did not allow at Lady Statesmen field goal for a 12-minute stretch over the third and fourth quarters. West Alabama's largest lead was 16 points with 50 seconds left, as the Tigers rebounded to shoot 50 percent from the floor (15-30) in the final 20 minutes.

"We were trying to create pressure, got some steals and breakaway points off turnovers in the second half," Cram said. "We started to trap and double team off ball screens."

The Tigers cored 19 points off turnovers and DSU scored 16, but a huge difference in the game was West Alabama's bench outscoring the Lady Statesmen bench 23-2.

Adding more ammunition to her quest for GSC Freshman of the Year, Garrett-Hammett scored 18 points and collected a career-high 15 rebounds to lead West Alabama. Kierra Groce and Peyton Parker chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.

"Tazsa has just one gear and she is a difference maker," Cram said. "She is really going to be something special. She already is."
