Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fleming’s free throw lifts Tigers to 66-65 road win over Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss.Josh Fleming hit a free throw with six seconds remaining and one defensive stop later, the West Alabama Tigers pulled out a gritty 66-65 road victory over the Delta State Statesmen in Gulf South Conference Men's basketball action Monday night.

UWA improves to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the GSC. Delta State falls to 8-10 and 6-4 in the conference.

"I don't know how we did it, but we found a way to win that ball game in spite of ourselves especially missing all those free throws," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "What a gutsy effort by our guys. There's nothing better than winning a conference road game."

Fleming's final free throw was part of a 28-point effort where the junior guard also finished with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. The West Haven, Conn. native was an unusual 5 of 10 from the charity stripe.

"Big time effort for us offensively. Charles Eaton didn't have a point at halftime," said Sharpe about Fleming's performance. "Josh stepped up and had 18 at the half and finished with 28, so we had to get some scoring from somewhere else and he really stepped up for us."

Charles Eaton and Gavin Robinson both had stronger second half performances as Eaton finished with 15 points and Robinson amassed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

While Trey Petty finished with four points and two rebounds, the most critical of the two came in the final minute on the offensive board when UWA was running clock to setup for the last possession.

"We joke about it a lot at practice about how it would be no fun to block out Trey Petty," said Sharpe. "He's probably about 6-foot-2 and 170 pounds, but he's just wired different from most kids and he gave a chance there at the end."

West Alabama moves into third place in the GSC standings with the win as the Tigers near the midway mark of the GSC schedule.

UWA returns to action in Livingston Thursday in Pruitt Hall against the Union Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9 and live-streamed on uwaathletics.com.
