Tigers handle Union in 85-56 GSC win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers never trailed against the Union Bulldogs, who never got closer than 16 points in the second half, and came away with an 85-56 win in Pruitt Hall Thursday night in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action.

The Tigers are now 13-5 overall and 7-3 in GSC play. Union falls to 8-10 and 2-8 in the conference.

"Winning is really good and we all enjoy it, but to have a game like this where we had a comfortable lead and have an opportunity to play everybody it really lifts the spirts," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "Even though we've won two in a row, we have several guys that aren't in the actual rotation, but boy to get everybody in really lifts up the spirits and we needed that. It's a long season and we needed a game like that."

In all, 11 of the 13 Tigers who touched the floor for UWA scored. Charles Eaton led them all with 23 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Josh Fleming also finished with 11 points and dished six assists.

As a unit, West Alabama shot 48 percent from the field going 29 of 61 from the floor and 17 of 22 from the free throw which is good for 77 percent.

UWA has now crossed the halfway mark in conference play and have wins over all remaining teams aside from the two new opponents in the upcoming matchups.

"I told them after the game that all you can do is mess it up," said Sharpe about his team's stretch run. "Whether it's your social life, getting in trouble, on the basketball court by not being coachable, in the classroom by not going to class, all these can do is mess it up. We have the pieces. We have the talent. We have to stay with it and keep pushing forward."

Up next for the Tigers is Christian Brothers who head to Livingston Saturday afternoon for GSC basketball action. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Pruitt Hall and will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9
