Shumpert Scores 30 as Union Escapes UWA With GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Chelsey Shumpert poured in 30 points to lead No. 16 Union to an 88-81 Gulf South Conference women's basketball win at Pruitt Hall Gym Thursday.

The win was the 12th straight for the Lady Bulldogs, who lead the GSC with a 17-1 overall record, 10-0 in league play. West Alabama dipped to 7-10 and 4-6.

After trailing by 17 points with just under six minutes to play, West Alabama cut the Union lead to five at 86-81 on a free throw by Elaine Field with 13 seconds left. Shumpert drained a pair of free throws with four seconds left for the final margin.

"I was pleased with our effort tonight. That's a really good basketball team that we played," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We had a little lull in the second quarter, but other than that it was a fairly even game."

West Alabama led 24-21 at the end of the first quarter, but Union doubled the Tigers up (22-11) in the second period to take a 46-38 lead into the half.

Both teams shot well, with Union converting 50 percent (31-61) and West Alabama 47 percent (27-57). The Lady Bulldogs made 11 three pointers to just four for the Tigers, but was layups down the stretch that proved the difference for Union.

"They got some good looks on back door cuts," Cram said. "When you play a four-out like they do there are going to be some lanes you can get. They broke out backs with three or four in the last eight minutes."

West Alabama's bench outscored Union 32-6. UWA outrebounded Union, 40-25, but Union converted 12 Tiger turnovers into 17 points.

"We had one of our season lows in turnovers, but they capitalized on the ones we had," Cram said. "We just need to stay together and keep working hard, keep getting better every day."

Jada Perkins followed Shumpert, who made six three-pointers, with 22 points. Sara Lytle added 17 more. Tiffany Rechis chipped in 10 to round out double figure scoring for Union. Shumpert also collected nine rebounds.

UWA freshman Tazsa Garrett-Hammett notched her fifth double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Field led the Tigers in scoring with 16. J'Nyiah Daniels added 14 for UWA. Kierra Groce also had 11 rebounds for West Alabama.

The Tigers are host to Christian Brothers Saturday on UWA Women's Basketball Alumni Day. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at Pruitt Hall. Former Tigers should contact assistant coach Coretta Brown at cbrown@uwa.edu if you are interested in participating.
