Tigers hold back CBU for 86-67 victory in GSC contest

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers never trailed and were only tied with the Christian Brothers Buccaneers for 29 seconds on the way to an 86-67 victory in Pruitt Hall in Gulf South Conference Men's basketball action Saturday evening.

UWA improves to 14-5 overall and 8-3 in the GSC. CBU's loss drops the Bucs to 13-6 overall and 5-6 in the conference.

"Not so good first half, but it was much better second have and primarily we're talking on the defensive end," said UWA Head coach Allen Sharpe. "Christian Brothers is similar to several of the other teams we play in the fact they have to have the three-point shot in order to be successful. They had seven at the half and we were really disappointed and we did a much better job adjusting in the second half."

After hitting the first seven, the Bucs would only connect for three more shots behind the arc in the second half.

The Tigers shot 49 percent from the floor going 33 of 67 from the floor.

Charles Eaton turned in his eighth 30-point performance, this time the senior guard went for 31 points and seven rebounds. Josh Fleming scored 22 and collected five rebounds while Trey Petty scored in double-digits for the first time this season with 11 points and added six rebounds and two assists.

The win improves UWA's home record to 9-1 and gives the Tigers a marque win over a solid conference team this season.

"To beat a Christian Brothers team is a big accomplishment for our program and where we're trying to go," said Sharpe. "Luckily, the schedule setup to where we played them once and that was here in Livingston. It's hard to come in here and get a win, because we play pretty well here."

West Alabama will be on the road for the next four games starting with a Thursday night trip to Carrollton, Ga. for a GSC matchup with West Georgia. Tipoff is set for 6:30 p.m. locally and the game will be broadcast on ESPN 104.9.
