West Alabama Glides by CBU, 70-58, for GSC Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – In a game where the lead changed hands 17 times, West Alabama ran away down the stretch to defeat Christian Brothers, 70-58, in a women's Gulf South Conference basketball game Saturday at Pruitt Hall.

West Alabama is 8-10 overall, equaling last season's win total with nine regular season games to play. The Tigers are 5-6 in GSC play. CBU dropped to 7-10 and 6-5.

"We weren't quite focused enough in the first half, but were much better in the second," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We were more aggressive in the second half. We are continuing to learn to play aggressive and hard the whole time."

The game was tied 26-26 at the half, but West Alabama outscored the Lady Buccaneers 44-32 in the final 20 minutes to win comfortably.

The Tigers shot 55 percent from the floor (26-47) while limiting the Lady Bucs to just 36 percent (18-50. West Alabama outrebounded CBU 34-24 and controlled the inside, outscoring Christian Brothers 44-12 in the paint.

Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 18 points to lead UWA and was a rebound short of her fifth double-double. J'Nyiah Daniels chipped in 14 points, making 6-of-8 from the floor. Peyton Parker added 10 for the Tigers. Sydney Bozeman joined Garrett-Hammett with nine rebounds.

"When you have three people score in double figures generally good things will happen," Cram said. "Tazsa played her butt off, Peyton had some big threes down the stretch and J'Nyiah's game is coming back."

Courtney Banks scored 13 points to lead CBU, followed by Mikaela Blissett with 11. Brynne Lytle collected six rebounds and Banks dished out seven assists.

West Alabama begins a four-game road swing at West Georgia on Thursday. Christian Brothers is host to Lee on Thursday.
