Tigers Control Boards for 59-51 Win at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Freshman Tazsa Garrett-Hammett recorded her sixth double-double of the season, including a career-best 18 rebounds, as West Alabama defeated West Georgia, 59-51, Thursday at The Coliseum.

West Alabama is 9-10 overall, 6-6 in Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia is 10-9 and 6-6. The Tiger victory snapped an eight-game West Georgia winning streak in the series.

West Alabama equaled its longest winning streak of the year, winning two straight for the third time this season. West Georgia has lost three in a row.

West Alabama controlled the boards to the tune of 64 rebounds to just 28 for West Georgia and outscored the Wolves 38-8 in the paint. The 64 boards were a season-high for the Tigers, 25 of them coming off the offensive glass.

Neither team shot well from the floor, with UWA making just 32 percent and West Georgia converting 26 percent.

"There are not many times when you shoot 32 percent against a two-three zone and win, but we were able to do that tonight," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "They are one of the best, if not the best, inside teams in this league and we controlled the inside."

West Georgia put together a 13-1 run over the last three minutes of the first quarter to lead 17-9 after 10 minutes, but the Wolves' fortunes changes to end the first half.

The Wolves made just 1-of-13 from the floor to end the first half while UWA put together a 14-2 run over last 5:51 of the second quarter to take a 29-25 lead in the half. The Tigers outscored UWG 20-8 in the second period and never trailed again.

"They make you play ugly. They are tall and long and don't give you many open shots," Cram said. "They are very good at scoring off offensive rebounds. We worked very hard on that and the kids answered the bell."

Garrett-Hammett had 13 points and four assists to go with her 18 boards. J'Nyiah Daniels also scored 13 points and Chloe Culpepper chipped in 12.

"I could start talking about Tazsa and go on all week," Cram said. "Still, there has to be help and we are starting to learn our roles and have other people score.

"To win in this league you need three people scoring in double figures," Cram said. "It doesn't matter which three, as long as there are three."

Aysha Harris scored 13 points to lead West Georgia and Jessica Brown added 12 points.

West Alabama plays the second of a four-game road swing Saturday at AUM. West Georgia is host to Montevallo on Saturday.
