Bozeman’s Bucket Lifts Tigers to 55-53 Victory

MONTGOMERY, Ala.Sydney Bozeman's layup with 0.3 seconds to play lifted West Alabama to a 55-53 women's Gulf South Conference victory over Auburn-Montgomery
Saturday at the AUM Athletic Complex.

West Alabama evened its overall record to 10-10, 7-6 in Gulf South Conference play. AUM dropped to 8-12 and 4-9. The 10th victory equals the most for the Tigers since the 2014-15 season.

Bozeman's layup came off an assist from Elaine Field off an inbounds play coming out of a Tiger timeout 1.1 seconds to play. The Furman's transfer's game-winner helped the Tigers fight back from a five-point deficit with 3:31 to play.

"The final play was a spur of the moment thing that I drew up during the timeout," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "When you have been coaching this game for 37 years, sometimes you get a hunch and it worked out for us tonight.

"That said, it took a perfect screen, a perfect pass and a perfect shot to make it happen and our kids executed it all," Cram said. "I am so proud of this team for keeping their focus against both our opponent and a great AUM crowd."

Both teams started slowly, with both failing to score for the first 3:08 of the game when Bozeman opened the scoring with a field goal off the blackboard, giving the junior from Dublin, Georgia the first and last basket of the game.

West Alabama did not allow the Warhawks a field goal for the first 6:02 of the game and limited AUM to just 1-of-13 from the floor in the first quarter, giving the Tigers a 14-5 advantage after 10 minutes.

West Alabama continued to put defensive pressure on the Warhawks in second quarter, limited AUM to one for their first 19 from the floor and 6-for-31 in the first half. The Warhawks did manage a 9-3 second quarter run to make it a 29-18 advantage for UWA at the half.

West Alabama led by as many as 17 points in the first half, but AUM cut the lead to seven early in the third quarter and to a three-point deficit at 40-37 by the end of the third quarter.

"They made some good adjustments in the second half and we knew that they would," Cram said. "We lost our composure for a minute, but got refocused when it mattered."

AUM tied the game at 42-42 on a jumper by Bailee Wolfe with 6:56 to play and took its first lead at 45-44 on a layup by Makaylla Bullard with 5:15 to go.

Bozeman scored 12 points to lead West Alabama scorers, followed by Chloe Culpepper with 11. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett collected a game-high 16 rebounds, missing her seventh double-double by one point Garrett-Hammett has collected 86 rebounds in the last seven games, an average of 12.3 per game.

Bullard led all scorers with 19 points, all coming in the second half for the AUM guard. Regan Croff chipped in 11 points for AUM. Evelina Avleeva, Aaliyah Milord and Wolfe had five rebounds each for the Warhawks.

After taking a week off, West Alabama plays the third of a four-game road swing Saturday at Montevallo. Auburn-Montgomery travels to Mississippi College on Thursday.
