Tigers Hold Off Montevallo for 85-82 Road Win

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After trailing by a dozen and leading by as much as 13 points, both in the second half, West Alabama held off a late Montevallo rally to beat the Lady Falcons, 85-82, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Saturday at Trustmark Arena.
 
The win improves West Alabama to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in GSC play. Montevallo lost its 17th consecutive game to fall to 2-20 and 0-14.
 
Eleven wins are the most for West Alabama in the last five years, dating back to the 2012-13 season when the Tigers won 14. The Tigers are also on a modest four-game winning streak.
 
Both teams shot extremely well from the free throw line, with West Alabama making 33-of-38 and Montevallo converting 22-of-25. The Lady Falcons made 10-of-22 from behind the three-point arc.
 
Both benches figured heavily into the game as well, with West Alabama's reserves scoring 38 points and Montevallo's 36. Montevallo scored 23 points off UWA turnovers.
 
J'Nyiah Daniels scored a UWA career high 25 points, making 14-of-14 free throw attempts. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett scored 22 for the Tigers, converting 9-of-11 from the floor. Elaine Field chipped in 13 points, while Kierra Gross and Sydney Bozeman had seven rebounds apiece.
 
Nautika Philpot and D'Miyah Foster both scored 14 points to lead Montevallo, with Philpot also dishing out six assists. Cheyenne Cunningham added 11 points, while Kourtnie Smith scored 10 and had six rebounds.
 
West Alabama closes a four-game road swing at Alabama Huntsville on Monday. Montevallo travels to North Alabama on Monday.
