Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers suffer heartbreaking home loss to Shorter, 78-75

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers held a 75-74, two-point lead with 1:01 on the game clock, but a missed shot on the offensive end gave the Shorter Hawks' Josh Burnett an opportunity to hit a three-pointer to put the visiting team on top en route to a 78-75 victory Saturday evening in Pruitt Hall in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball action.

UWA falls to 10-5 overall and 4-3 in GSC competitive play. Shorter improves to 2-13 and 2-5 in the conference.

The three-point shot made by Burnett was the second for him on the night, but the 13th overall for the Hawks who shot 54.2 percent from behind the arc on 24 shots.

"I'm disappointed in the fact they did it for the first 20 minutes, we go in at half time and address the issue and we come out in the second half and didn't get much better at it," said Head coach Allen Sharpe on defending the three-pointer. "We knew before this game that the three-point shot was the equalizer for them and we knew how important it was to defend the three and we didn't get it done."

Charles Eaton turned in his third consecutive 30-point effort and sixth overall as the Selma, Ala. native scored 31 points on 12 of 25 shooting from the floor. The senior guard also grabbed four rebounds and made three assists.

As a unit, the Tigers shot 29 of 59 from the floor, which is 49 percent, but turned the ball over 12 times and went 65 percent from the free throw line.

"The college basketball season is a long year, it's a grind and it's especially tough when you have the Thursday/Saturday quick turnaround," said Sharpe. "It started today at shoot around when we didn't get our drill down. We didn't have any pep or energy and it kind of carried over to this evening. You could just feel it."

Josh Fleming was the only other double-digit scorer for the Tigers with 11 points. Charles Tripp made the most of his minutes as the Demopolis, Ala. native finished with eight points and eight rebounds in 10 minutes of action tonight.

"Each one of these guys as aspects to their games which needs to be fixed or addressed before it's too late," said Sharpe. "On the other hand, it's a good thing. We have not arrived and we all have a long way to go. Hopefully we can spin that around and make it a good thing and we'll keep improving."

TayVaughn Major finished with 23 points and Burnett notched a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Shorter. Amonte Potter poured in 19 points to round out double-digit scorers for SU.
UWA will have some time to prepare for the Lee Flames who will make the trip Livingston, Ala on Jan. 10 for GSC competition in Pruitt Hall. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Jan. 8, but both teams agreed to move the game to the Wednesday date.
