Shorter Holds off UWA Rally for 61-57 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Shorter held off a furious second-half rally by West Alabama to defeat the Tigers, 61-57, in women's Gulf South Conference basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

Shorter snapped a four-game losing skid, improving to 3-10 overall and 1-6 in GSC play. West Alabama is 6-8 and 3-4.

Shorter led by 23 points with 5:10 to play in the third quarter before West Alabama came storming back to cut the lead to three points with 2:47 to play and then again with 7.4 second left. It was as close as UWA would get.

"The same team that came back is the same team that got us in the hole by 23 points," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "So, if you are looking for positives from me you are not going to get them.

"There was not one phase of our game that was decent today," Cram said. "We didn't come out mentally focused to play and that obvious by 24 turnovers, missing 18 free throws and allowing 17 offensive rebounds."

West Alabama shot 34 percent (18-53) from the floor, but Shorter was worse at 32 percent (18-56). Still, West Alabama's only lead in the game was by one point just 1:03 after the opening tip. The Tigers were 18-of-36 from the free throw line, Shorter 20-of-34.

Four Hawks scored in double figures, led by Bianca Thornton with 15 points. Jasmine Gaines chipped in 13, Raven Fair 11 and Roni Richardson 10. BreAnna Thompson collected a game-high 14 rebounds.

West Alabama freshman Tazsa Garrett-Hammett had 15 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double. J'Nyiah Daniels was the only other Tiger in double figures with 11 points. Daniels also had eight rebounds.

West Alabama closes a three-game homestand by hosting Lee Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Shorter visits Montevallo Tuesday.
