Tigers Handle Lee in Straight Sets on the Road

CLEVELAND, Tenn.– The West Alabama Tigers rose to the occasion once more grabbing a crucial win against a Lee Flames team near the top of the Gulf South Conference Volleyball standings and did so with a sweep Saturday afternoon.

UWA improves to 17-5 overall and 10-2 in the GSC Lee falls to 10-12 and 8-3 in the conference.

The Tigers only dropped one set this weekend, winning the first set 28-26, the second set 25-12 and the third set 25-20 against the Flames.

"Our coaching staff is so incredibly proud of this group of girls," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "I cannot speak enough on their composure and their belief in each other. There was not a single moment this weekend that they didn't trust each other or believe that we were going to win and that is something that can't be taught. We again had big time plays today and each kid had a huge impact on our success. We have learned to control our errors better and make adjustments faster and we are going to have to carry that into next weekend as well."

Taylor Donato led with 14 kills and 11 digs. Madison Cooler added 11 kills and nine digs. The reigning GSC Offensive Player of the Week Kassie Till posted 32 assists and 10 digs in the quick match.

Jessica Akiona led the match with 19 digs while adding six kills. Alex Fuelling tallied 17 digs while Bret Luther led the front line with three blocks.

"Excited for what's ahead for this team and the opportunity they have this upcoming weekend," said Meeks.

Coming up this weekend is the Gulf South Conference/Sunshine State Conference South Region Crossover Tournament being held in Orlando, Florida. Opponents for the crossover are based on conference standings heading into the weekend. At this time, that has not been determined but opponents and game times will be announced on uwaathletics.com.
