Tigers Rally for Five Set Victory over UAH

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The West Alabama Tigers got down two sets to none before rallying in dramatic fashion to defeat the Alabama-Huntsville Chargers 3-2 in five sets Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference Volleyball action.

West Alabama improves to 15-5 overall and 8-2 in the GSC. UAH falls to 17-5 and 6-3 in the conference.

"Wow, what a battle. Huntsville is a very talented team and that showed the entire match," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "I am most proud of how we kept our composure going down 0-2. I made some crucial changes and we made a few offensive adjustments and our girls found a way to flip the momentum.

The Chargers won the first set 28-26 and the second set 25-21. The Tigers claimed set three 25-17, the fourth set 25-22 and the final set 15-8.

Jessica Akiona posted the best performance of her freshman season so far with a match leading 24 kills, 20 digs, four blocks and a service ace. Taylor Donato added 18 kills, 10 digs, and two blocks; Jaime Lancellot added 14 kills and five blocks while Madison Cooler posted 13 kills.

Kassie Till set a new career high with 65 assists to keep the offense moving while adding 20 digs, three kills and two blocks.

"I have to give a ton of credit to Jessica," said Meeks. "That kid did not play like a freshman tonight but instead rose to the occasion and was a huge factor in our dominate offense. Kassie as always distributed the ball well and we had kids step up in huge moments defensively. This was an outstanding weekend for our program, outstanding. I am so proud to coach this group."

Bret Luther led with six blocks while Alex Fuelling had 20 digs to match the team high. Rebecca Johnson added 17 digs.

West Alabama will have seven straight matches away from Pruitt Hall starting with a match against the Shorter Hawks in Rome, Ga. on Oct. 12 in GSC action. The match is scheduled to begin 5 p.m. CDT.
