Slow Start Hampers Tigers in 66-52 Loss to Eckerd

LAKELAND, Fla.– For the second straight day, the West Alabama Tigers showed improvement on offense from the first half to the second except this time the defense didn't hold up as the Eckerd College Tritons grabbed a 66-52 victory to wrap the Sunshine State Conference/Gulf South Conference Challenge for both teams at the George W. Jenkins Field House this afternoon.
 
UWA falls to 0-2 to start the season while Eckerd improves to 2-0.
 
EC built a 28-20 halftime lead in the sluggish start for both teams before outscoring the Tigers in the second half 38-32 to lead to the 66-52 final score.
 
Josh Fleming finished with 18 points on 7-of-16 shooting from the floor to lead the Tigers while also collecting a team high three steals and also grabbing six rebounds. DeAndre Harper finished with rebounding lead for the team with 10.
 
Drushaun McLaurn led a trio of Tritons in double digits with 21 points along with nine rebounds. He was joined by a 12-point effort from Myron Hagins and 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists from Marco Behori.
 
UWA led in total field goal percentage at 33.3 percent while Eckerd averaged 31.4 percent from the floor. The Tritons were masters of the board with 43 rebounds compared to 28 for the Tigers. Eckerd made the most of turnovers and outscored UWA in the category 21-9.
 
West Alabama returns to action on Nov. 15 in the home opener against Selma University scheduled for 7 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
