Tigers Defeat Selma in Home Opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– Playing in the confines of Pruitt all for the first time this season, the West Alabama Tigers defeated the scrappy Selma Bulldogs 87-68 Thursday night.

UWA grabbed its first win of the season and improves to 1-2.

"We are a work in progress," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "Certainly, we're happy to win. However, we need players to separate from each other in terms of impacting winning. That way we can define a rotation of players and we can more clearly define roles."

The Tigers and Bulldogs traded the lead throughout the first half, but UWA took a 39-30 lead to the locker. UWA exploded after the half and outscored Selma 48-35 to run to the 87-68 final score.

Ricky Dunnaway and Tyrus Grayson both finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. DeAndre Harper followed right behind them with 14 points and six rebounds.

LaJuan Hardy put on a show passing the ball to the delight of the Pruitt Hall crowd and totaled six assists along with nine points. Darron Johnson led the defense with five steals and also added nine points.

A trio of Bulldogs finished in double-digits as Yurmon Barnes scored 17 points, Keyshawn Baker added 15 and JaQuan Hicks scored 14.

UWA won the battle on the boards and outrebounded the Bulldogs 39-18.

West Alabama shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from the three-point line and an outstanding 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the free throw line.

Selma went 53.7 percent (29-of-54) in total field goals, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from behind the arc and 37.5 percent (3-of-8) from the charity stripe.
