Tigers Handle VSU in Four Set Victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers didn't waste a chance at revenge and earned a four-set victory over the Valdosta State Blazers Friday night in Gulf South Conference action in Pruitt Hall.

With the win, UWA improves to 20-8 overall and 12-3 in the GSC. VSU falls to 14-17 and 9-6 in the conference.

"This win was huge for our program for many reasons as is tomorrow's game. The girls came out ready to battle and I am especially proud of our two middles on how they performed offensively and defensively throughout the night," said Head Coach Alexis Meeks. "We struggled to find our rhythm in the second set but bounced back in the third due to aggressive serving by everyone. We are still getting better each game as individuals and as a team and that has been our main goal and all I can ask for as a coach. Excited for what is still to come for this team and excited to honor our seniors tomorrow night as they are a huge reason as to why our program is where it is."

The Tigers won the first set 25-17, the third set 25-6 and the fourth set 25-17. VSU earned a victory in the second set 25-23.

Three Tigers finished with double-doubles led by 15 kills and 15 digs from Madison Cooler. Taylor Donato had 14 kills and 12 digs and Jessica Akiona tallied 12 kills and 19 digs. Jaime Lancellot also finished double digit in kills with 10.

Kassie Till was the trigger point for the offense with 52 assists.

As a unit, the Tigers finished with a solid .287 hitting percentage.

Tonight's win marks the first 20-win season for UWA Volleyball since the Tigers won 21 games during the 2011 season. UWA can finish no lower than the third seed entering the GSC Volleyball Championship Tournament.

West Alabama returns to action to close the regular season tomorrow against West Georgia scheduled for a 1 p.m. start time. The Tigers will also honor the two seniors, Alex Fuelling and Lancellot, for their contributions to the squad during their time at UWA.
