Tigers Defeat Wolves, Clinch #2 Seed for GSC Tournament

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– On an emotional day where the West Alabama Volleyball team honored seniors Alex Fuelling and Jaime Lancellot, the Tigers handled business and defeated the West Georgia Wolves in four sets Saturday afternoon in Pruitt Hall. The win clinched the #2 seed in the Gulf South Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament

UWA improves to 21-8 on the season and 13-3 in the GSC. The Wolves fall to 11-15 overall and 5-11 in the conference.

"I first have to give credit to West Georgia. They showed up to play this afternoon and really made us work for this win," said Head coach Alexis Meeks. "We struggled a lot in the beginning of the match with our passing and defensive and West Georgia attacked us aggressively. We have got to do a better job of finishing close sets in crucial moments of the match especially early on in a match. Our serving picked up in the second set and we forced them out of system and then made better adjustments on defense."

Jessica Akiona turned in a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Lancellot shined in her last game in Pruitt Hall with 15 kills, four blocks, two assists and a pair of digs. Madison Cooler also posted double digit kills with 14 while posting a match leading six service aces.

Kassie Till once again kept the offense moving with 47 kills while adding three kills and two service aces offensively and eight digs defensively.

"This win was a true team effort and I could not be prouder of how we finished regular season," said Meeks "The girls said in August that they wanted 21 wins and that's what we got tonight. Always exciting as a coach when you can see your kids reach their goals! Excited for tournament next weekend but we have a lot to work on this week at practice to prepare for the tough battle we have ahead of us."

Today's win gave this year's team a program record extending 13th conference win. UWA's previous record was 11 GSC wins which was set in 2002 and matched last season.

As the second seed in the GSC Championship Tournament, the Tigers will receive an opening round bye and play the first match Saturday. Time and potential opponents have yet to be determined.
