Tigers Prevail in Battle with Miles College, 57-55

FAIRFIELD, Ala.– It took every second in the contest, but the West Alabama Tigers prevailed 57-55 in a fierce battle with the Miles College Golden Bears in Knox-Windham Gymnasium Tuesday evening spoiling the home opener for Miles College.

"I told the team the only two things better than winning on the road are getting married and having kids," said head coach Allen Sharpe. "Anytime you can win on the road it's a big deal. Miles is a really good team. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win their conference.

West Alabama took a 28-23 lead to the half, but Miles won the second half 32-29 and led with 37 second on the clock. However, clutch play by the Tigers helped them escape with a 57-55 win.

LaJuan Hardy played every minute in the contest and finished with nine points (all of the final four points for UWA), seven assists, six rebounds and two steals. Jake Jobling finished as the leading scorer with 10 points. Trey Petty recorded 10 rebounds including eight offensive rebounds and scored seven points.

"I thought about calling a timeout, but I knew LaJuan could take advantage of a broken defense. I trusted him to step up and handle the situation," said Sharpe of Hardy's last possession heroics. "And Trey stepped up big. We've been waiting on him to do that. We've challenged him a bit. We struggle a little bit on offense and anytime you can create extra possessions it helps."

DeAndre Harper finished just outside of double digits witn nine points and four rebounds.

The Tigers shot 35.3 percent (18-of-51) from the floor, 33.3 percent (8-of-24) from the three-point line and 72.2 percent (13-of-18) from the free throw line.

Jeffery Dockett scored 12 while Devante Fuller scored 10 and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Golden Bears.

West Alabama returns to action for one more non-conference contest against Oakwood University. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall.
