Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Tigers Hold Off Oakwood for 68-59 Victory

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– The West Alabama Tigers built a solid lead at the half and used it to help stave off the gritty Oakwood Ambassadors for a 68-59 win Monday night in Pruitt Hall.

UWA evens the season record at 2-2 with the win.

"The first half I felt like we played pretty well. Our field goal percentage was good, and we held them to 23 points at the half," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "For whatever reason in that second half we didn't do as good of a job. We got away with a win and after having a few days off, having a game before we go to Delta State is good for us."

The Tigers built a 36-23 lead at the half, but Oakwood come on strong in the second half and outscored UWA 36-32. However, the surge was not enough as West Alabama came away with the 68-59 edge for the win.

"It may be good the way that ended, because now everybody is going to be on edge at practice tomorrow," said Sharpe. "Rather than having a smooth comfortable win, that second half wasn't pretty and hopefully that can be a good thing. We got their attention and we can get ready for Delta State Thursday."

Charles Tripp led UWA in scoring with 14 points and added five rebounds and a block. Acie Vance finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three assists while Ricky Dunnaway rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points and seven rebounds.

DeAndre Harper and LaJuan Hardy put up impressive all-around games. Harper posted nine points, eight rebounds, four assists and a steal while Hardy finished with seven points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals.

The Tigers shot 42.6 percent (20-of-47), 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from behind the arc and 70.6 percent (23-of-34) from the free throw line.

Talik Tolton led Oakwood with 15 points and five rebounds and Desham Hotobah-During scored 13 points.

West Alabama's aforementioned contest against Delta State serves as the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams and tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Cleveland, Miss. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 104.9.
