Tigers Rally for Overtime Win over MC, 81-79

LIVINGSTON, Ala. Jake Jobling hit a baseline jumper as time in regulation expired to give the West Alabama Tigers the extra five minutes needed to come away with an 81-79 overtime victory over the Mississippi College Choctaws Saturday evening in Gulf South Conference action.

UWA improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the GSC. MC falls to 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in the conference.

"We were down for the count. We had no answer for (Brandon Boston) or (Marcus Lytle)," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "We had no answer and we didn't want to go zone, because we did a good job taking away the three tonight. It was a great win. I don't know how we did it, but somehow we came through tonight."

The Choctaws took a 36-34 lead to halftime and got up by as much as 14 points with 13:33 left in the second half. Yet the Tigers found a way to rally and force overtime where they outscored MC 10-8 on the way to an 81-79 victory.

"This win says a lot about our guys," said Sharpe. "There was an old coach that said to me one time that the toughest league in the country to win in basketball is your league. It's not the ACC for us because we don't have to beat Duke. All of these games are "grind it out" type games. We kept it close enough down the stretch. That's why we practice. We worked on the play to get Jake the look he got down the stretch."

LaJuan Hardy set his UWA career high with 21 points along with a team leading eight rebounds, five assists and five steals. Ricky Dunnaway scored 19 points and added five rebounds and a block. Acie Vance rounded a trio of double-digit scorers with 11 points and also had seven assists, three rebounds and a steal.

West Alabama shot 48.3 percent (28-of-58) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from behind the arc and 81 percent (17-of-21) from the free throw line.

Brandon Boston and Marcus Lytle both scored 27 points in the loss. Tre Jenkins also reached 10 points for the Choctaws.

The Tigers return to action Dec. 4 in Pruitt Hall in a non-conference game against Miles College. That game is set to start at 7 p.m. UWA beat the Golden Bears in Fairfield, Alabama on Nov. 20 57-55. Live video and live stats will be available on uwaathletics.com.
