Garrett-Hammett, Culpepper Notch Double-Doubles in Tiger Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala.Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Chloe Culpepper both had double-doubles to lead West Alabama to an 80-52 women's college basketball victory over Oakwood Monday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved West Alabama, who led from start to finish, to 2-4. Oakwood dropped to 0-9.

"A win anywhere is good, but we still have a lot of growing to do," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "There were some positive things, but we have to play tougher."

Garrett-Hammett, last year's Gulf South Conference freshman of the year, scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Culpepper had 16 points and 10 boards. Elaine Field chipped in 12 points as nine UWA players scored in the game.

"Tazsa is starting to find herself again. She is coming back into her game," Cram said. "Chloe could have doubled her output. They didn't have an answer for her."

Despite a poor shooting night, the Tigers pulled away in the second half thanks largely to a 15-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away.

West Alabama shot just 39 percent (32-81) from the floor, 19 percent (4-21) from the three point line and 46 percent (12-26) from the free throw line. The Tigers outrebounded the Ambassadors, 57-44, and scored 33 points off 34 Oakwood turnovers.

"It is easy to let down when you play a team like this," Cram said. "Not to make any excuses, but we had three players who didn't dress tonight and that can get you out of rhythm. That's not healthy for us right now."

Doroteya Jackson put together a double-double for Oakwood, leading all scorers with 19 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. Grace Cartwright chipped in 12 points for the Ambassadors, who made just 20-of-57 from the floor (35 percent) and 8-of-23 from the free throw line (34 percent).

West Alabama opens GSC play Thursday at Delta State (2-2) . Oakwood plays at Talladega College on Thursday.
