DSU Edges UWA, 81-80, in OT to Open GSC Play

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Nia Johnson coaxed in as layup with nine seconds left in regulation to tie the game and then hit a free throw with 7.3 seconds left in overtime to hand Delta State an 81-80 overtime win over West Alabama Thursday at Walter Sillers Coliseum.
 
The Lady Statesmen extended its winning streak to four games and improved to 4-2, 1-0 in the GSC. West Alabama is 2-5 and 0-1.
 
DSU built a 24-12 lead by the end of the first quarter, but UWA limited the Lady Statesmen to just three field goals in the second period. The Tigers forced DSU scoring droughts of 2:46, 3:18 and 2:12 in the second quarter.
 
Delta State led 31-26 at the half, with the difference coming at the free throw line. Both teams converted 12-of-30 from the field over the first 20 minutes, but the Tigers missed all five of their free throw attempts and the Lady Statesmen made all five of theirs.
 
West Alabama converted 10-of-16 field goal attempts in the third quarter to take a 54-52 lead with 10 minutes to play. Over the same period the Tigers held DSU to 35 percent (6-of-17) from the floor. The Tigers limited the Lady Statesmen to just nine field goals over the second and third quarters.
 
West Alabama led by six points with 6:09 to play in regulation, but the Tigers failed to convert a field goal in the last 2:49, while the Lady Statesmen made 5-of-7 down the stretch, including Johnson's layup to send the game into overtime tied at 67-67.
 
The game was tied three times and the lead changed hands three times in overtime before Delta State extended its lead to 79-73 on a pair of free throws by Ernesha Chatman with 38 seconds left. West Alabama clawed back but a three-pointer by J'Nyiah Daniels as time expired was too little, too late after Johnson's free throw.
 
Daniels finished with 16 points to lead West Alabama scoring. Jala Williams followed with 13 and Kierra Groce chipped in 11. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett collected nine rebounds as the Tigers outrebounded DSU 49-40.
 
Kirstin Brown led all scorers with 22 points for Delta State, including making 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Johnson added 14 points, followed by Alondrea Rush and Jordan LeNoir who added 13 each. Frederica Haywood led all rebounders with 15.
 
West Alabama's bench outscored the DSU reserves, 42-19, but the Lady Statesmen converted 24-of-30 free throw tries while UWA made just 15-of-28.
 
Both teams return to GSC action Saturday at 2 p.m. West Alabama is host to Mississippi College and Delta State entertains Montevallo.
