Tigers Grab Gritty Win in GSC Opener over DSU, 62-54

CLEVELAND, Miss.– It was a tough defensive battle in the Walter Sillers Coliseum, but the West Alabama Tigers hit the big shots when it mattered to grab a 62-54 win over the Delta State Statesmen Thursday night in Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Action.

UWA improves to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 to open GSC play. DSU falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

"Anytime you can win a game, it's huge," said Head Coach Allen Sharpe. "Delta State is a good team and not many people are going to come over here and win."

The Tigers took a 25-22 lead at the halftime and won the second half as well 37-32 on the way to the 62-54 win.

Jake Jobling and DeAndre Harper both scored 11 points to lead UWA in scoring. Josh Fleming scored 10 in his return to action to round a trio of double-digit scorers. Ricky Dunnaway scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds while LaJuan Hardy finished with eight points, six assists and five rebounds.

"We had some timely shots, timely shots," said Sharpe. Jake made a couple of big ones and of course Josh had the huge one at the end. How about Tyrus made two big free throws? When you play Delta State, the score is so low and close. Every possession is big, and we made some timely baskets."

West Alabama finished 38 percent (19-of-50) from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-of-21), and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line.

Justin Slocum led the Statesmen with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Rasheide Bell had 14 points and Matthew Wilson was almost the difference maker for DSU with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from outside.

"You have to be able to defend a long possession," said Sharpe. "Very rarely are they going to shoot it off that first screen. You have to be able to get the stop off the third, fourth or fifth screen. I thought (Wilson) about won the game for them after he made some big baskets. Being able to stay with the long possession against these guys is the key to being able to stop them."

UWA won the battle of the boards and outrebounded Delta State 37-33 and the Tiger bench outscored the Statesmen 24-0.

West Alabama returns to action on Saturday against Mississippi College in the GSC home opener for the Tigers. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. in Pruitt Hall. Live stats and Live video will be available on uwaathletics.com with the game being broadcast on ESPN 104.9 with Nicholas Finch on the call.
