Four Score in Double Figures in UWA Win over MC

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – Four players scored in double figures as West Alabama defeated Mississippi College, 80-69, in women's Gulf South Conference basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym.

The win improved the Tigers to 3-5 overall, 1-1 in the GSC. Mississippi College is 3-3 and 0-2.

"We are getting better every day," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We have had 'Basketball 101' around here for the last three or four days and the kids have responded well."

Bria Dent led all scorers with 18 points for West Alabama, while Tazsa Garrett-Hammett cobbled together a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Garrett-Hammett scored 11 of her 15 points from the free throw line.

J'Nyiah Daniels chipped in in 15 points and Latangellia Walker 14 to round out double-figure scoring for UWA, who played without the services of four players due to injury and personal matters.

"We are getting more and more coachable," Cram said. "We could have given up with four players out, but we didn't. When you have four people in double figures that is a great team effort."

West Alabama led 35-34 at the half in a game where the lead changed hands five times and the score was tied three times. The Tigers led for just over 34 minutes in the game.

Although both UWA and MC collected 43 rebounds, West Alabama won the points in the paint battle, 30-24.

Lauran Sheriff was the only Lady Choctaw to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Jamilah Sanders led Mississippi College with seven rebounds.

Elaine Field collected nine rebounds for West Alabama and Dent grabbed seven more. Jala Williams had six assists.

"Jala is getting better and better, while J'Nyiah had a heckuva game herself," Cram said. "When Tazsa gets a double-double these days she has to find a way to get there. Folks are doubling her up and making her work."

West Alabama takes the week off for Fall Semester final exams before returning to the court Dec. 11 at Paine (Ga.) College. Mississippi College is host to Miles College Saturday.
