Tigers Drop Exhibition Opener at UNO

NEW ORLEANS – Traya Bruce and Shania Woods combined for 50 points to lead New Orleans to an 84-64 women's college basketball exhibition win over West Alabama Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
 
New Orleans, an NCAA Division I program, shot 41 percent from the floor, including making 8-of-16 three pointers, on the way to the victory over the Tigers. West Alabama answered by converting just 33 percent (21-of-62) from the field, making just 4-of 12 from behind the three point arc.
 
UNO led 46-22 at the half after holding UWA to just nine points in the second quarter. The Tigers outscored the Privateers, 28-18, in the third period and 42-38 in the second half, but it was too little too late.
 
Bruce was 6-of-9 from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point range, and had four assists. Woods collected 15 rebounds for the only double-double of the game. Jada Duncantell chipped in 13 points for UNO.
 
Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Chloe Culpepper scored 11 points each to lead West Alabama,. Kierra Groce chipped in 10. Garrett-Hammett and Elaine Field had six rebounds each for the Tigers. J'Nyiah Daniels passed out six assists.
 
West Alabama opens the regular season Saturday against Eckerd College at the Embry Riddle Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida. New Orleans is at home Tuesday against Centenary.
