Men’s Basketball Opens Regular Season Tomorrow Against #22 Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla.– The West Alabama Men's Basketball team will have a trial by fire to start the season as the team participates in the Sunshine State Conference-Gulf South Conference Classic starting with the #22 Florida Southern Moccasins on their home floor, the George W. Jenkins Field House at 2 p.m. CST.
 
After weeks of intra-squad games and exhibitions against Marion Military Institute and Southern Arkansas, the Tigers are set to take on Florida Southern for the fifth straight year and second straight year to open the season.
 
Josh Fleming is leading returning scoring for UWA after averaging 16.5 points last season to along with 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists a contest. The senior guard from New Haven, Connecticut will be depended on lead the scoring load for the Tigers as he is the only returner that started in double-digit contests.
 
A total of six returning players will have to mesh seven newcomers to find success this season for UWA. The Tigers were picked to finish eighth in the GSC standings by conference coaches despite receiving a first-place vote.
 
The Mocs were picked to win the SSC this season and returns all five starters from a 21-11 team last season that scored a first round upset over top seeded Morehouse in the NCAA South Regional Tournament. They will be led by the backcourt tandem of Jonathan Lawton (22.2 ppg) and Brett Hanson (18.0 ppg).
 
Following the FSC contest, UWA will face Eckerd College in Lakeland, Florida at 11 a.m. CST Saturday before returning to Pruitt Hall for the home opener against Selma on Nov. 15 starting at 7 p.m.
