Tigers’ Second Half Rally Falls Short in Loss to #22 FSC

LAKELAND, Fla.– Despite a rough start to the game, the West Alabama Tigers had a chance late, but the rally came up short in a season opening 76-68 loss to the #22 Florida Southern Moccasins in their first contest of the Sunshine State Conference/Gulf South Conference Challenge Friday afternoon

Florida Southern took a commanding 46-26 lead to the halftime locker room, however in the second half the Tigers righted the ship and outscored the hosts 42-30.

Four Tigers finished in double digits.

Ricky Dunnaway finished with a double-double in his UWA debut with 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and 11 rebounds but fouled out after 21 minutes of action. Darron Johnson and Charles Tripp led the team with 13 points while Josh Fleming added 10.

Jonathan Lawton finished as the scoring leader in the contest with 23 points along with eight rebounds for the Florida Southern.

Turnovers doomed the Tigers in the loss as UWA committed 21 giveaways while the Mocs limited themselves to eight turnovers.

As a unit, UWA went 42 percent (26-of-62) from the field while FSC went 43 percent (29-of-68) from the floor.

West Alabama returns to action tomorrow morning against Eckerd College in George W. Jenkins Field House with tipoff set for 11 a.m. CST.
