Tigers Hold Off Golden Bears’ Rally for 57-54 Win

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– In another battle this season with the Miles College Golden Bears, the West Alabama Tigers needed every bit of their early lead in order to come away with a 57-54 Tuesday night in Pruitt Hall.

UWA claimed its fifth straight victory to improve to 5-2 on the season. Miles had a three-game win streak snapped and now sit at 3-3 overall.

"Definitely a tale of two halves," said Head coach Allen Sharpe. "That first half was probably the best offensive output this season so far. We were really clicking and making shots. Shooting comes and goes, and it left us in the second half. I told the guys that's why you have to defend. There's different reasons why we won that game, but the big reason was Miles only getting 19 points in the first half."

The Tigers built as much as a 20-point lead before finally taking an 18-point 37-19 lead to halftime. The Golden Bears outscored UWA 35-20 in the second half and got within a point, but UWA held off the rally for the 57-54 win.

"Our defense held them (early) and we got some stops down the stretch even though they made a tremendous comeback and got back in it. We had some timely stops down the stretch," said Sharpe.

Three Tigers finished in double figures led by 17 points and nine rebounds from Ricky Dunnaway. Acie Vance finished with 15 points, five assists, two steals and two rebounds while Josh Fleming scored 12 points and added two rebounds and two assists. DeAndre Harper tied for the team lead in rebounds with nine and added two points, a block, steal and an assist.

West Alabama shot 44.2 percent (23-of-53) percent from the floor, 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from the three-point line and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the free throw line.

Avery Brown and Nathan Sheffield both scored 13 points to lead Miles.

UWA returns to action in one week on Dec. 11 in Pruitt Hall against Paine College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Livingston, Alabama with live stats and live video available on uwaathletics.com.
