Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWA Wins Third Straight, Stays Undefeated at Home

LIVINGSTON, Ala.– West Alabama remained undefeated at home by beating Shorter, 60-43, in Gulf South Conference women's basketball Saturday at Pruitt Hall Gym

West Alabama won for the third straight time, improving to 5-5 overall and 2-1 in GSC play. Shorter lost its fifth consecutive game, falling to 1-8 and 0-3.

West Alabama led for 39:16 of the game and never trailed. The Tigers largest lead was 23 points with 9:47 left in the game. Shorter's 43 points is the lowest point total allowed by UWA this season.

"This is the best defense we have played all season," Tiger head coach Rusty Cram said. "There were probably six-to-eight instances where we took them to the last second on the shot clock.

"We played 35 minutes of pretty good basketball," Cram said. "We are not pleased with the last five minutes of the game, but I hate to complain about at 27-point win.

"This is three wins in a row since a one-point loss at Delta State," Cram said. "We are getting past hoping to win to expecting to win."

West Alabama led 26-14 at halftime, due in large part to Shorter closing the first half by making just 1-of-14 field goal attempts. West Alabama committed just two fouls in the first 20 minutes of the game, not allowing the Lady Hawks a trip to the free throw line.

Three Tigers scored in double figures, led by sophomore forward Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 12 points. Elaine Field added 11 and Chloe Culpepper chipped in 10. Freshman Bria Dent collected a career-high 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

"Tazsa is her own worst enemy right now," Cram said. "The coaches at this level are good at what they do and when are coming off a freshman of the year season they know how to play her. She is learning how to play against that, and she will.

"Bria was everywhere, but she is still learning as a freshman how to play team basketball," Cram said. "Still, we are continuing to get better and better and I am proud of that."

Shorter's Raven Fair led all scorers with 21 points but needed 25 shots to reach that total. Tatum Ragsdale chipped in 14. Elizabeth Newberry had seven rebounds to lead the Lady Hawks and Jamilla Harrison dished out seven assists.

Both teams return to action on Monday. West Alabama is host to West Georgia and Shorter visits Montevallo.
