Tigers Guaranteed Home Quarterfinal Game after Win over MC, 87-64

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The good times keep rolling for the West Alabama Tigers as the team as secured a home game in the Gulf South Conference Men's Championship Tournament with an 87-64 victory over the Mississippi College Choctaws Saturday night in Pruitt Hall.

UWA now stands at 19-6 overall and 13-4 in the GSC. MC sits at 9-13 overall and 6-11 conference mark.

"These games are scary. We had a big win Thursday night and had a big crow here. It was somewhat of an emotional win at the end," said Head Coach Allen Sharpe. "You always worry about bouncing back on a Saturday afternoon. There's no pep band, it's raining outside and it's kind of dreary and as coach you really worry about games like this. Mississippi College probably won't make the tournament and teams like that are scary to play against. I've been a nervous wreck all day just hoping we had enough energy and hoping we were mentally in the game plan. Thankfully we got through it."

Sharpe also shared his thoughts on the importance of clinching a home game for the quarterfinal round of the postseason tournament.

"It's a credit to our program, players and coaching staff that we've stepped our level of play up," said Sharpe. "That's a huge advantage. We did it a couple of years ago when we made the conference championship game. It was against Delta State. It was a huge crowd here, standing room only. Pruitt Hall is probably a place a lot of people don't like to come play, especially when it's full and rocking. Hopefully when we get to that point we'll have a great crowd and it'll give us an advantage in advancing in the conference tournament."

As for the game itself, UWA never trailed to the Choctaws and shot 47 percent from the floor on 29 of 62 shooting.

Charles Eaton achieved a double-double for just the third time this season with 26 points and 15 rebounds to go along with three assists. Josh Fleming finished with 17 points and five assists. DeAndre Harper added 15 points as well.

Domonique Alexander brought down seven rebounds and blocked five shots in a game for the sixth time this season. However, the native of New Orleans, La. fouled out with 5:36 left in the game forcing the Tigers to use a difference defensive strategy which they were able to succeed in anyhow.

"It changes a lot, but we had some other guys to fill in and we're able to get it done," said Sharpe. "We have some versatility. We have some guys that can play different spots. There was even one stretch where we had Trey Petty guarding a post player down there. We were able to get through it. That's the good thing about this team is that we have some depth and we have other guys that can make plays when one man goes down."
Xavion Dillon led MC with 18 points and nine rebounds while Donovan Ham scored 14 and Dyllan Taylor added 11.

UWA just wrapped up a stretch of four games in seven days and must prepare to hit the road once more to Jackson, Tenn. to face Union University Wednesday night. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN 104.9.
