West Georgia Spoils UWA Senior Day

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – West Georgia put a damper on West Alabama's senior day activities by defeating the Tigers, 92-82, in women's Gulf South Conference basketball at Pruitt Hall Gym on Saturday.

West Georgia improves to 15-11 overall with the win, 11-8 in GSC play. West Alabama is 13-13 and 10-9.

Averaging four three pointers per game coming into the contest, West Georgia made nine against the Tigers and shot 50 percent from the floor (29-of-57). West Alabama has allowed 26 three-pointers and 194 points over the last two games, both conference losses.

"You really hate to lose on Senior Day, but until we start defending better we are not going to win," UWA head coach Rusty Cram said. "We are not the same team we were a week ago. We are having to play some different people due to injury and illness."

West Georgia made just 25-of-41 free throws, but outscored UWA 32-26 in the paint and never trailed in the game. The score was tied just once, and five Wolves scored in double figures.

"When your opponent shoots 41 free throws on your court, you are playing lazy," Cram said. "We have given up almost 200 points over the last two games despite scoring in the 80s both times. That won't get it done."

The two teams combined for 54 fouls and 40 turnovers. West Alabama outrebounded UWG 45-42.

Aysha Harris scored a career-high 25 points and dished out eight assists to lead West Georgia. Kayla Carter chipped in 19 points, followed by Jessica Brown with 15 and nine rebounds. De'Ashia Jones and D'Asia Cain rounded out double-figure scoring for the Wolves with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

J'Nyiah Daniels had 24 points for West Alabama. Tazsa Garrett-Hammett and Peyton Parker chipped in 15 and 10, respectively. Elaine Field had six steals and four assists. Senior Emilee Cunningham collected eight rebounds on her last action at Pruitt Hall.

West Alabama travels to North Alabama (23-3, 16-3) to conclude the regular season on Thursday. West Georgia closes the regular season Thursday at Auburn-Montgomery (3-24, 1-18).
