Saint Leo Scores Come-From-Behind Win over West Alabama

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo came from five runs down to earn a 9-6 college baseball victory over West Alabama Sunday at Thomas B. Southard Stadium, giving the Lions a series win over the Tigers. The Tigers and Lions split a doubleheader on Saturday.

McCabe Sargent (2-0) earned the pitching win in relief of starter Joey Antonpoulos, scattering three hits over three scoreless innings. Drew Tumbley earned his second save, allowing just one hit over three shutout innings. Peyton Warren (0-1) absorbed the loss in relief of starter Colton Morgan, giving up three runs on three hits over 1.1 innings pitched.

Trailing 1-0 after three innings, West Alabama (2-7) put up six runs in the top of the fourth. Tiger centerfielder Brock Montgomery had the big blow, a three-run home run over the wall in right field. Joel Murphy and Luke Phillips drive in runs with singles and Lincoln Stubbs raced home on a wild pitch to round out the scoring.

Saint Leo (6-2) answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jared Morello doubled to right center to drive in two runs and then scored on a single by Lane Stancil to cut the UWA lead to 6-4.

SLU's Brett Coffel led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer, his second of the series, to close the gap to 6-5 West Alabama. Aaron Portee then tied the game at 6-6 with a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the sixth and the Lions took a 7-6 lead when Stancil, who had reached on a base on balls, scored on a passed ball with two outs.

Coffel picked up his fourth hit of the game, driving in two more runs with a triple in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away for the Lions. Coffel finished a double short of hitting for the cycle.

Ben Dalke had three hits to pace a 13-hit West Alabama attack. Austin Moffett, Lincoln Stubbs and Dominique Dawson had two hits each for the Tigers, who left eight runners on base.

In addition to Coffel's four hits, Peyton Isaacson and Morello had two hits each in an 11-hit Lions attack. SLU left nine runners on base.

West Alabama is host to Miles College Wednesday at Tartt Field. Saint Leo begins a three-game series at Lynn in Friday.
