Big Inning Propels Miles Past UWA, 16-8

LIVINGSTON, Ala. –Miles College scored 10 runs in the seventh inning on the way to a 16-8 college baseball win over West Alabama Wednesday at Tartt Field.

West Alabama (2-8) lost its third straight game and has dropped six of its last seven. Miles improved to 5-8 with the victory.

The Golden Bears jumped to a 4-1 lead after two innings, but West Alabama scored three in the third and two more in the fourth inning to take a 6-4 lead. It wouldn't last.

Miles sent 14 batters to the plate in the 10-run seventh, taking advantage of four hits, four West Alabama errors, two hit batters and a walk to put the game away. The Golden Bears tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, while UWA pushed across a run in the seventh and ninth for the final margin.

Freshman Andrew Datcher (1-0) earned the pitching win in relief of starter Matthew White. Datcher worked five innings, allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out six and walking three. Jay Booth (0-1), one of eight UWA pitchers, took the loss by allowing three runs and a hit while recording just one out in the seventh.

Reeves Brashear, Jacob Bisharat, Kolby Brannon, Tyler Sampson, Brandon Conner and Will Cantey all had two hits in a 15-hit Miles attack. Brashear drove in four runs and Bisharat three.

Joel Murphy had three of West Alabama's nine hits. Lincoln Stubbs and Corey Kelley had two hits each. Jake Hartman drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the third inning. Kelley and Murphy had two RBI apiece.

West Alabama opens GSC play with a Friday doubleheader at Lee (4-8). First pitch is set for 1 p.m. central time. Miles begins a two-game series at West Florida (3-6) on Tuesday.
