Game Recap: Baseball |

Salter's Outing Salvages Saturday Split at AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala.JT Salter went the distance in game two, striking out 10 in a 2-1 victory, to help West Alabama salvage a doubleheader split Saturday at Auburn-Montgomery. AUM won the first game, 11-1.

West Alabama's win also kept the Tigers from being swept in the three-game Gulf South Conference at the AUM Baseball Complex. The Tigers are 7-13 overall, 4-5 in GSC play. The Warhawks are 8-11 and 2-7.

A junior from Bay Minette, Alabama, Salter (2-1) allowed just five hits and walked two. AUM starter Nathan Langley (1-1) also worked a complete game, allowing two unearned runs on five hits while striking out seven in the loss.

West Alabama struck first in game two when Chris Simon singled and later scored on a ground out by Joel Murphy in the third inning. The Tigers tacked on another run in the top of the seventh when Brock Montgomery drew a one-out walk and came around to score on an AUM throwing error.

The Warhawks lone run came in the seventh inning when pinch hitter Hayden Friesen singled with two outs and scored on a pinch hit double off the bat of Hunter Hillyer.

AUM struck early and often in game one, scoring four runs on four hits and two Tiger errors in the bottom of the first inning. The Warhawks stretched the lead to 8-0 after five innings.

Luke Phillips' first home run of the year in the top of the seventh was the only run the Tigers would score before AUM put three more on the board in the eighth to enact the mercy rule. A two-run double by Matthew Zielonko was the blow to end the game in the eighth.

Hank Scott (3-2) worked eight innings for the AUM game-one win, allowing one run on just four hits. Tiger starter Colton Morgan (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on seven hits.

Aaron Hill had three hits to pace a 12-hit attack for AUM in game one. Curtiss Johnson, Logan Nix and Friesen all chipped in two hits.

Phillips added a double to hit homer to collect half of UWA's four hits in game one. Simon had two of West Alabama's five hits in game two.

West Alabama closes a five-game road swing Tuesday at North Alabama in a game that will not count in the GSC standings. AUM is host to Georgia Southwestern on Wednesday.
